South Korean refiner Hyundai Oilbank and airline Korean Air have agreed to explore the manufacture and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or biojet.
The companies "will work to develop a foundation for biofuel manufacturing and its usage; explore opportunities for SAF usages in the market; raise awareness about SAF; and propose relevant policies," Korean Air said.
The airline used SAF for the first time in Korea in 2017, by mixing biofuel extracted from plants such as corn with jet fuel.
Efforts to increase use and production of SAF in Asia-Pacific are intensifying, although no national mandates have been announced.
In Japan, a cross-industry group has operated two domestic flights using Japan-origin biojet made from algae and woody biomass, Japan Air Lines is co-operating with local firms in a SAF production project using industrial and municipal waste, and refiner Idemitsu is considering supplying SAF from 2025, starting with production of 100,000 kilolitres/yr (1,700 b/d).
UK-based sustainable fuels technology company Velocys has entered a collaboration agreement with Japanese plant engineering firm Toyo Engineering to start developing commercial projects to produce SAF and other renewable fuels in Japan.
Last month, Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific said it will buy 1.1mn t of SAF over 10 years from US-based producer Fulcrum from 2024. Singapore Airlines aims to increase the use of biojet across its network in an effort to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
In China, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) producer Sanju Biofuels said in April that it was undertaking trials of SAF production at its isomerisation unit in Anyang in Henan province, and HVO producer Eco Environmental plans to add 50,000-55,000 t/yr of SAF capacity to its 300,000 t/yr HVO plant in Jiangsu by the end of the year.
Finladn-based refiner Neste is expanding its Singapore plant, with work set to be finalised in the first quarter of 2023. Coupled with SAF capacity growth at the firm Rotterdam's plant, the expansion will enable Neste to produce 1.5mn t/yr of biojet by the end of 2023.
